Love Leeds and can’t bear to leave? Here’s how to stay with a paid graduate internship

Dr. Steve Carter, one of our Career Consultants, outlines the Leeds Internship Programme: Graduate Internships and how you can get involved.

If you have just graduated and are thinking of staying in Leeds but are unsure of your options, you might want to consider an internship on our Leeds Internship Programme.  Starting in October, these paid 12-week internships with local Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) are exclusively for University of Leeds graduates.

The kind of projects that have been available in the past include digital marketing, sales, project management, business planning, engineering, manufacturing and publishing.  They are paid (£300 p/w) and provide an opportunity for you to develop the skills employers value such as communication, team work, organisation and commercial awareness.  It will also be the chance to put theory into practice and allow you to put the knowledge and learning from your degree to practical use.

The Leeds Internship Programme is now in its 2nd year and we will again be looking to secure at least 20 internships for Leeds graduates. Last year, at least half of the graduates were kept on by their employing organisation once the internship had finished.

So, if you are interested in the Leeds Internship Programme: Graduate Internships all you need to do to register your interest is email with your name, course title, year of graduation and perhaps a short line or two as to the kind of project you might be interested in.  Your email’s title should be ‘Leeds Internship Programme – Graduate’. (You should also include a non-University of Leeds email address.)

Projects will start to be advertised in September and October for a late October start.  When they go live you can find them at logging on with your University of Leeds username and password (this will still be valid).  Click at the top left on ‘Vacancies’, then ‘Advanced Search’ and scroll down to ‘Vacancy Tags’, then click the ‘Leeds Internship Programme’ followed by ‘Search’ for the vacancies to come up.

Application for the internships will be usually be by CV and covering letter unless otherwise stated.  If you need any further help with your applications, or indeed with interview techniques, you can access our drop-in services 9-4, Monday to Friday, no appointment needed.

So, if you are staying in Leeds and still considering what to do, this could be one of your options!
