We were at Freshers fair today and loved speaking to so many of you – at all stages of your studies! We thought it might be useful to answer some of the most common questions we were asked today on the blog, so here they are.

We will also tweet ongoing common questions and advice at #UoLCareerQs and if you’ve got a careers-related question, just tweet us using the hashtag.

Q: What does the Careers Centre do?

We are here to help ALL University of Leeds students with their careers and next steps after university. Whether you’re an undergraduate, a postgraduate or a PhD student; whether you know exactly what you want to do or if you have no idea, we are here to help you.  You can find out more about our services on our website.

Q: How do I make an appointment with careers?

Answer: We are currently moving to a new – and improved – online appointment booking system.  From next week (w/c 26th September) you will be able to book an appointment online at http://careerweb.leeds.ac.uk/appointments.

If you need to see someone urgently this week, please telephone reception on 0113 3435295 who will advise you of availability.

We will also be running drop-ins again from 1pm-4pm Monday-Friday from next week.

Q: Where are you located?

We are based at 5-7 Cromer Terrace, just around the corner from LUU and opposite Charles Morris Halls of Residence.

Q: I need to write a CV or application, but don’t know where to begin!

Answer: We have loads of advice – including examples – on our website.  Once you have an opportunity you want to apply for, use this advice to produce a first draft and then bring it to us to be checked.

Q: What support do you offer postgraduate students?

All of our services are open to postgraduate and PhD students as well as to undergraduate students.

Q: What support do you offer international students?

All of our services are available to international students.  We also have some additional information and advice which may be particularly useful for international students, including advice on working in the UK, working internationally and making the most of your time at Leeds.

Q: I’m looking for a part-time job to fit around my studies. Can you help?

We don’t generally advertise part-time jobs.  Most of the opportunities we advertise will be full-time internships, placements or graduate jobs.  However, we do occasionally advertise a part-time internship.  The best place to go for part-time jobs is Joblink in LUU.

Q: I want to practice some psychometric tests.  Should I just buy some practice ones online?

No (unless you particularly want to!).  We subscribe to various online tests so that you can practice for free. See our website for details.

Internships

We had so many questions about internships, that it seemed best to write a mini section on it.  We can support you in your internship or work experience search, whether you’re a first year right through to a post-graduate student or beyond!

This includes;

  • Advertising 100s of internship/ placement/ work experience opportunities every year. This includes opportunities locally, nationally and internationally. Search opportunities at http://careerweb.leeds.ac.uk/jobsandinternships
  • Helping you narrow down your interests or decide on what types of internships you are interested in
  • Helping you find less obvious, or unadvertised opportunities
  • Supporting you throughout the application process

New Digital Resource

Our Work Placement team have just launched a brilliant new digital self-help resource with everything you need to know about placements.  This includes input from students who have done placements as well as from employers.  It is aimed at students interested in a placement year, but a lot of the information is really valuable when looking for any type of work experience.

This resource is open to all University of Leeds students and accessed via the VLE at http://students.leeds.ac.uk/yourplacementyear
