About hannahclareakitt

I'm a third year undergraduate studying English and French at the University of Leeds and I am currently on my year abroad as a Language Assistant in the south of France. Growing up in the southern Lake District, which, although beautiful, boasts one of the country's highest unemployment rates, I am determined to boost my career opportunities and not get stuck in the 'unemployed pile' where I have seen so many people struggle. Although temporarily working in Education, my dream is to work either in journalism or publishing. In fact, working as an editor for a big publisher is my dream; being surrounded by thousands of book proposals and possibly discovering the next big thing to hit the literary scene. I suppose you could call me geeky, but I just love books. I had contemplated the idea of teaching, but after this year I am not sure I'm cut out for it, and you will discover why if you read my posts! When I'm not focused on university or my future career you can find me either outside enjoying the fresh air or snuggled up with a book. When in Leeds I love to get involved with the university's Raise and Give (RAG) committee, organising and attending events, such as the Everest Base Camp Challenge, which I was fortunate enough to be a part of last year. Music and fashion also play a huge role in my happiness, nothing makes my day more than finding a vintage gem in a charity shop or discovering a new artist to add to my every growing Itunes library. In this blog I hope share with you the ups and downs of my year abroad and how the experiences I have had in France will influence my success in my degree, career and future. A year abroad can be a great thing to add to your CV, so if you're thinking about taking one then I hope to inspire you to make your decision, and if you're about to set off on one, I hope to give you as much advice as possible before your big adventure.

Choosing your year abroad

Thinking of taking a year abroad as part of your degree? Hannah-Clare Akitt, a student who is currently on her year abroad, gives her advice on things to bear in mind.

Whether you’re studying languages and a year abroad is compulsory, or you’ve just decided it might be a good idea, there are a few things you need to think about before you apply.

For me, as a language student, the year abroad was inevitable, and preparations began at the beginning of my second year Continue reading
