As something that I usually mention in interview preparation with students and graduates, I’ve been thinking about writing a post on the rule of 3 for a while. Being reminded of the Olympic motto, with its focus on aiming high and continuous improvement, this weekend prompted me to get it written.
The Olympic motto; “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, meaning “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, is one example of the rule of 3. Think how often popular phrases, soundbites from famous speeches or advertising slogans are comprised of 3 words or parts.

What is your job at the Careers Centre and what does it involve?
I am the Fair Liaison Officer. I work in the Employer Team and we are responsible for organising Careers Events on campus including employer presentations and Careers Fairs. Recently I was involved in managing the Autumn Graduate Jobs and Internships Fair which was attended by 109 organisations and over 3500 students. I promote our events to employers and students and oversee the booking procedure. I oversee the logistics for Careers Fairs including creating and editing Fair Guides, organising car parking and catering and making sure attendees have all the information they need. In the next of our “Meet our staff” series we meet Claire Alford, as she tells us about her role as a Careers Advisor.
What is your job at the careers centre and what does it involve?
I am a Careers Adviser; most of my time is spent working in the Careers Centre offering information and advice to students. This includes the drop in service where students can come in to the centre without an appointment. Whilst on drop in I provide information and advice to students or I can refer them for a mock interview or longer guidance appointment with a Careers Consultant. I also conduct mock interviews myself and this includes tailoring each question to meet the job specification and providing constructive feedback throughout. Another part of my role is answering queries on eGuidance along with planning and delivering workshops throughout the academic year. Continue reading
