Hilary Dixon, who studied Japanese & Politics at the University of Leeds, joined Frontline’s 2014 Cohort after graduating. Here, she shares her experience as a social worker on the Frontline Programme, and reflects on the support and opportunities the university provided her with.

Social work, day to day

In a typical week I might have visits with children and families in schools, homes or hospitals, and speak to teachers, nurses and other professionals who work with them. This can be challenging but interesting. I think it’s a privilege unique to social work; to be able to have a window into how many different professions operate and to learn about and try to understand the experiences of the families and children living such different lives within the one London borough where I work.

How I got my job: Partnerships Manager, Retail Team at Cancer Research UK

Jess HudsonJessica Hudson (History, 2012) is a Partnerships Manager in the Retail Team at Cancer Research UK after having completed their graduate scheme. In this post she shares her experience of getting into the Charity sector as well as her advice for others interested in doing the same.

I’m Jess and I studied History at the University of Leeds from 2009-2012. I enjoyed 3 amazing years in Leeds, where I seemed to spend most of my time getting told off for talking too loudly in the Brotherton or getting a cheeseburger from Zulfis at 3am. But it was my involvement with one of the societies at Leeds Uni, READ International, which really reinforced my decision to forge a career in the charity sector. Continue reading

How I got my job: HR Graduate scheme

HessieHessie Coleman has recently graduated from the University of Leeds with BA German & International Relations (Joint Honours). She is currently in her first placement on Centricas HR graduate scheme which she was offered a place on after completing their Summer Programme.

When you think of doing a 10 week HR internship with a Top 30-FTSE 100 company over the summer, do you expect to spend your second day on the job taking the corporate card to Hamleys to organise some fun and games for the monthly office beer and pizza night? No? I didn’t either! But between that, being given the chance to take responsibility for various projects (including keeping on top of headcount/budget information, managing an office move and supporting the development of the office culture), amazing development opportunities and a whole lot of fun, I got more than I expected from my summer internship with Centrica and so far, the graduate scheme is living up to expectations Continue reading

SMEs – the Graduate Scheme alternative

Think graduate schemes are the only option? Think again! Our guest blogger, Anna Pitts of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, explores the great advantages of working for a SME.

Graduation

You might think that the best kind of job you can get once you’ve graduated from university is with a large, multinational corporation, perhaps on their graduate scheme. But graduate jobs have far more scope than that. Whilst there are advantages to bigger businesses with well established brands, they aren’t your only option for employment. There are 4.8 million businesses in the UK, and 99% of these are small or micro businesses employing fewer than 10 people- that’s a lot of SMEs! Continue reading
