Leeds Management student Katy Ingham completed an internship with Marks & Spencer this summer, through the Leeds Internship Programme. In this post she shares what she learnt and her tips on finding and securing internships.
What is the internship about?
The internship gave me insight into a commercial management role within Marks and Spencer’s. During my internship I worked in the York store. The 8 weeks consisted of trips to distribution sites to understand the whole supply chain, an all expense paid few days in London, where I was lucky enough to spend time in Head Office with the customer insight team and complete the M&S leadership course. However, most of the internship was in store, where I discovered how to be a commercial manager. Typical tasks involved reading figures, implementing changes to the shop floor, engaging staff in giving excellent customer service and creating staff notice boards. Finally, I was given a project based on the new campaign ‘Making every moment special’ for M&S customers. This involved creating my own ideas to add value to the company, which I presented to the Head of Region. I was able to develop my professional network, confidence and commercial awareness throughout my experience. Continue reading
This week, Psychology student Chloe talks about her experience of securing a placement by directly approaching the employer. She goes into a bit of detail about her role at Virgin Active and how contacting them helped her land an exciting placement position. If you’re struggling to find any advertised opportunities that you’re genuinely interested in, this post can show you an alternative approach to the conventional application process.
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to complete a year placement role unique to any others I had seen advertised. I was given multiple job roles and training with the global company of Virgin Active. During my placement I was given the opportunity to take up the front of house role, the membership sales consultant role and also shadow and assist the service managers during team meetings and in the work place. The job roles varied but they all required constant face-to-face customer contact. As a consequence I had to quickly develop my communication and customer service skills. All of the job roles were very demanding and thus required me to be able to quickly adapt and be versatile. This is because some days I could switch between all of these three job roles in just one day. Although difficult, I found this very rewarding as the more challenges I overcome in one job role, helped me thrive in another.

Tahmina is a Leeds University History graduate who is now working in Marketing and Communications at TPP – an IT company, specialising in healthcare software. In this post she tells us a bit about the company, and explains how Careers Fairs have aided TPP’s recruitment process. She provides some useful tips on attending careers fairs and getting the most out of the experience.
TPP is a Leeds based IT company dedicated to delivering world class healthcare software in the UK and internationally. We moved into our new headquarters in Horsforth earlier this year which houses 600+ staff. With just over 200 employees at the moment, we are having a huge recruitment drive to get talented graduates to be part of this exciting time of growth.
Our focus is on graduate recruitment and most of the people who work at TPP join us straight from university. As such, we place a lot of emphasis on working with universities to find the right people. We advertise on university careers websites, write blogs occasionally and also attend careers fairs.
In this week’s blog post, Hannah, a Leeds University Geography student tells us about her role as a placement student at IBM, how she got the role and what skills and experiences have helped her application stand out. Hannah works in the Watson Internet of Things business unit – IBM Watson. The Internet of Things and number of connected devices is growing daily, so this is a particularly exciting internship opportunity in a developing sector.
