My role as a Graduate GIS¹ Consultant involves establishing and developing GIS capabilities for Delta-Simons Environmental Consultancy. To provide some context, this involves a full set-up of a functioning system to introduce GIS as a service within the company, which includes aspects such as: identifying the most suitable system, identifying employee data requirements, database management, and template creation. Other responsibilities include GIS maintenance, solving of technical queries, providing training to employees, conducting analysis for technical reports, and developing efficiencies whilst maintaining business-as-usual activities. As the GIS workload fluctuates during its introductory phase, my role also provides opportunity to gain exposure to the range of environmental disciplines that Delta-Simons specialise in, such as flood risk and ecology.
Securing the role
The experiences which have helped me to secure the role at Delta-Simons began with the decision to extend my degree with an industrial placement. Initially, I wasn’t convinced that it would be worthwhile to invest a year of my time in a field that I may not be interested in.

Getting my placement
To be honest, I was completing application after application in the hope of finding some kind of experience within psychology, but at times they can feel like gold dust! I applied for this forensic psychology placement, not really knowing at all what forensic psychology was. I thought I was going to be some sort of criminal profiler; clearly I’ve watched too many crime series! I filled in their application, which I received through the psychology department, and sure enough got my first ever interview. I researched the hospital I would be based at before the interview, and came up with some questions about the types of therapy that are offered to service users. I also went to a mock interview at the careers centre, which I’d highly recommend. In the real interview, my enthusiasm for psychology clearly outshined my lack of knowledge on what clinical/ forensic psychology is, and I got a call the next day saying I’d been accepted!
Dan Rhodes is studying BA Digital Media at Leeds and is currently undertaking a placement year as a Digital Marketing Assistant within the University’s Facilities Directorate. I am currently on placement as a Digital Marketing Assistant within the Facilities Directorate at the University. The directorate is responsible for areas of the University that you don’t often think about as a student – Estates, Residences, Sustainability Services and the Commercial and Campus Support Services which include the sports facilities (SPA and The Edge), the catering team Great Food at Leeds (GFaL), conferencing (MEETinLEEDS), print (PCB), cleaning and security.
My role includes a wide range of exciting responsibilities for all of these areas. Continue reading

Antoinette Flocel Abel is studying Broadcast Journalism at Leeds and is currently undertaking a placement year as a Communications Assistant with the University’s Communications team, which she secured through the Leeds Internship Programme. In this post she outlines her role, and her advice for other students seeking placements.
I am the Communications Assistant at the University, working on the top floor of the Ziff Building. As part of Internal Communications, I help reach staff with messages through different mediums including the staff website, all-staff enewsletter, magazine and social media. I also dabble in Student Communications by helping the team to manage the official Facebook and Twitter pages, and occasionally presenting live stories from the University of Leeds Instagram.
About my placement
Being raised in Derby, the North was never really an area I ventured to very often. However, I fell in love with Leeds on my first undergraduate open day and knew that this was a University that I would be happy to spend the next few years studying Broadcast Journalism (unaware at this point that I would also be working here too). I am currently on my placement year, based within the University of Leeds Careers Centre, working as Student Support and Engagement Intern for Volunteering Opportunities and the Students into Schools programme. Leeds Management student Katy Ingham completed an internship with Marks & Spencer this summer, through the Leeds Internship Programme. In this post she shares what she learnt and her tips on finding and securing internships.
What is the internship about?
The internship gave me insight into a commercial management role within Marks and Spencer’s. During my internship I worked in the York store. The 8 weeks consisted of trips to distribution sites to understand the whole supply chain, an all expense paid few days in London, where I was lucky enough to spend time in Head Office with the customer insight team and complete the M&S leadership course. However, most of the internship was in store, where I discovered how to be a commercial manager. Typical tasks involved reading figures, implementing changes to the shop floor, engaging staff in giving excellent customer service and creating staff notice boards. Finally, I was given a project based on the new campaign ‘Making every moment special’ for M&S customers. This involved creating my own ideas to add value to the company, which I presented to the Head of Region. I was able to develop my professional network, confidence and commercial awareness throughout my experience. Continue reading
