Antoinette Flocel Abel is studying Broadcast Journalism at Leeds and is currently undertaking a placement year as a Communications Assistant with the University’s Communications team, which she secured through the Leeds Internship Programme. In this post she outlines her role, and her advice for other students seeking placements.

My role

I am the Communications Assistant at the University, working on the top floor of the Ziff Building. As part of Internal Communications, I help reach staff with messages through different mediums including the staff website, all-staff enewsletter, magazine and social media. I also dabble in Student Communications by helping the team to manage the official Facebook and Twitter pages, and occasionally presenting live stories from the University of Leeds Instagram.

About my placement

Being raised in Derby, the North was never really an area I ventured to very often. However, I fell in love with Leeds on my first undergraduate open day and knew that this was a University that I would be happy to spend the next few years studying Broadcast Journalism (unaware at this point that I would also be working here too). How I got my placement: Retail Commercial Management at M&S

Katy M&S

Leeds Management student Katy Ingham completed an internship with Marks & Spencer this summer, through the Leeds Internship Programme. In this post she shares what she learnt and her tips on finding and securing internships.

What is the internship about?

The internship gave me insight into a commercial management role within Marks and Spencer’s. During my internship I worked in the York store. The 8 weeks consisted of trips to distribution sites to understand the whole supply chain, an all expense paid few days in London, where I was lucky enough to spend time in Head Office with the customer insight team and complete the M&S leadership course. However, most of the internship was in store, where I discovered how to be a commercial manager. Typical tasks involved reading figures, implementing changes to the shop floor, engaging staff in giving excellent customer service and creating staff notice boards. Finally, I was given a project based on the new campaign ‘Making every moment special’ for M&S customers. This involved creating my own ideas to add value to the company, which I presented to the Head of Region. I was able to develop my professional network, confidence and commercial awareness throughout my experience. Continue reading

Biological Sciences student Alisha talks about her decision to do an industrial placement abroad with UCB biopharma, Belgium. She talks about the experience and give some useful advice for students looking to do a placement abroad.

About the placement:

For my year in industry I decided to go to Belgium to work at UCB biopharma in Braine L’alleud (near Brussels). Here I worked in the investigative toxicology department on a project involving drug induced cardiac injury. My activities varied on a day to day basis from undertaking experiments in the lab, to analyzing data and compiling literature reviews in the office. This meant that I got to experience how research projects worked in medium sized pharmaceutical companies such as UCB, and being in a relatively small department meant that I was making a real contribution to the project, which will lead to me having my name on a poster and published article next year. How I Got My Job: Placement at Bradford Institute for Health Research

bihr

Find out how Psychology students Lucy and Mayur landed their placements at Bradford Institute for Health Research. They share some useful tips on how to approach the application process and get relevant experience for research-based positions.

About the placement:

Mayur: Lucy and I have been working as Research and Implementation Assistants since joining the Bradford Institute for Health Research in September. Our work in the Quality and Safety department mainly consists of participating in a number of projects to improve patient safety in the NHS. Even though we both come from a Psychology degree, this placement has helped us to further explore the technicalities behind conducting research; doing things such as conducting questionnaires, systematic reviews, scoping and grey literature reviews, transcribing interviews, writing study protocols, attending focus groups and managing the department website. There have also been opportunities to attend lectures and conferences in Leeds, Harrogate and Oxford.
