Commercial Awareness and COVID-19

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the UK and global economy meaning major shifts across industry and the labour market. Jade Rogan, Careers Consultant at University of Leeds has some tips on how you can keep commercially aware to inform your career planning in these uncertain times.

There are a few different words I could use to describe the current situation COVID-19 has put us all in. Most of which I couldn’t write here. When we look at the reports of the economic impact of COVID-19 we see buzz words, ‘Economic crisis’, ‘economic fallout’, ‘recession’ bandied about by the media.

Some recent news headlines from the BBC include ‘Chancellor warns of ‘tough times’ for UK economy’, ‘South Asia faces worst economic growth in 40 years’, and, to add insult to injury, ‘’Up to 50m’ pints going to waste in empty pubs’. It’s intimidating and it’s uncertain.  No one knows for sure what will happen in the next week, three months or in twelve months time.

But the wheels keep turning for students and graduates still looking for work experience, graduate roles or to pursue further study. So amongst all of the uncertainty and the media’s worrying headlines, how can you keep up to date and stay commercially aware? Why is this more important than ever? And how can you use this to your advantage when making applications or thinking about your career plans?

Class of 2018: Getting the most out of the ‘hidden job market’

This piece was written for Class of 2018 Month by Alex Proctor, a Careers Adviser at the University of Leeds Careers Centre.

“It’s not what you know, but who you know.” It’s a common phrase; a cliché even, but it’s one all graduates should bear in mind when undertaking their job search. The importance of contacts in any industry shouldn’t be understated, because the ‘hidden job market’ does exist.

My success story

I was fortunate enough to benefit from the hidden job market when trying to break into the world of Careers Advice and Guidance. While on a placement within the sector, I put time into developing professional relationships with two senior managers outside of my team. As a result, they went on to offer me a further unadvertised role.

Admittedly I wasn’t an expert for this particular job, and needed a lot of training to undertake the day-to-day responsibilities, but by demonstrating my networking abilities, enthusiasm for the sector and transferable skills, I managed to crack the hidden job market. Without working on my professional contacts, I might not have been fortunate enough to gain this experience, which I am still developing in my role at present.

How I got my job – Data Analysis and Digital Communications Intern

This week, HR student Hristina talks about how she landed her placement at the University of Leeds Careers Centre. She gives a bit of insight into the Leeds Internship Programme as well as application tips and advice.

I’m currently the Data Analysis and Social Media Intern here at the Careers Centre – after I finish my placement I will return to my final year of studying BA Human Resource Management. My placement is a part of the Leeds Internship Programme and I’m involved in analyzing data and producing various monthly/weekly reports, working on the Careers Centre’s social media presence, as well as lots of other ad-hock activities and projects.

Staying safe online in your job search

As with most things, job hunting these days is largely done online.  Whilst the connectedness and ease of finding information online is undoubtedly useful, care is needed with how you approach your online job search.

There are many career-related advantages to living in such a connected World and we talk a lot about the ways social media and other online platforms can help you; from networking, to exploring career ideas, to developing your own professional presence, among many others.

As with most things, there is also a potential flip-side.  With recent reports mentioning a huge increase in the number of job related scams, and that many of these target students and graduates particularly, we thought some advice on things to be aware of is timely. Continue reading

Marc Steward, one of our Career Consultants, wrote this post last week for the LUBSSoc blog, aimed at business students.  However, it is equally applicable for any student so we wanted to share it here too.

These words are somewhat redundant following the sad death of David Bowie (and, let us not forget, many others worldwide in 2016).

Thinking about David Bowie reminded me of all the incarnations he has been through during his career: from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, he was famous for not being pigeonholed and for constantly re-inventing himself and his music. Creative, innovative and entrepreneurial…

LinkedIn: The recruiter’s perspective

We talk a lot about the value of LinkedIn, and the range of ways it can be useful for you as a student or recent graduate. Last week Lisa Jones of Barclay Jones delivered a really insightful session for students interested in careers in social media.  Lisa shared her experiences of recruiting recent graduates to social media roles as well as some great tips and advice for those interested in this career area.

  1. Sort yourself out online

If you are serious about working in social media, then you need to have a good online presence yourself.  Make yourself accessible and approachable in the places recruiters will likely be looking for the ‘professional’ you, particularly LinkedIn and Twitter. Plus bear in mind that many recruiters will check applicants out online.  Lisa referenced one study in which 82% of employers last year admitted to checking out online profiles before making a hiring decision.
