What is it?
Our CV Checker is a useful career platform that provides detailed, personalised feedback on your CV. Powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the CV Checker gives you practical tips to optimise your CV and tailor it to specific job opportunities. Using our CV Checker you can review cover letters too.
Why should I use it?
You can use the CV Checker 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! So even though we would not recommend leaving writing an application until 23:59pm on a Sunday, the CV Checker is available to you even when our Careers Advisors are not.
The CV Checker helps you get the most out of your Careers appointments, allowing you to identify the parts of your CV that need additional work. With the detailed feedback the CV Checker provides, you can work with our Careers Advisors to improve your CV, enabling you to submit a strong application.
CareerSet
The CV Checker is on the CareerSet platform, which includes three main functions, ScoreMyCV, TargetMyCV and Review My Cover Letter. Here you can also find useful resources such as CV Templates and Cover Letter examples.
Score My CV
Just upload your CV and receive expert advice in seconds! The CV Checker identifies areas for improvement and provides explanations and examples on how you can strengthen these areas.
First, choose the type of CV you are submitting, if you are not sure we recommend the ‘Standard’ option. Then upload your CV in PDF format, to receive a score based on key criteria that recruiters and hiring managers are looking for, aim for a score of 70.
This function gives personalised feedback on your CV, providing line-by-line analysis to help you improve your CV one line at a time. Use this information to improve your CV and then re-upload it to see how your score has changed.
Finally, book an appointment with one of our Careers Advisors, through MyCareer, to help you further strengthen your CV.
Target My CV
When applying for a specific opportunity, you can use this function to help tailor your CV. It is important to tailor your CV to the specific role in order to make it past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that filter and rank applicants, which happens primarily based on relevancy to a job description. This is where the TargetMyCV function is here to help!
Simply upload the job description of the role you are applying for, alongside your CV and you will receive a score on how relevant your CV is to the role. This function highlights the keywords and skills that you should include in your CV, helping increase your chances of success.
This function also provides sample job descriptions, so even if you are not currently applying for a specific role you can still tailor your CV to the description of roles such as, Sales Associate, Research Assistant and Accounting Associate.
Review My Cover Letter
We know how annoying writing a cover letter can be, but this function is here to save the day! You can find cover letter templates here.
Once you have written your cover letter, upload it, along with the job description of the role you are applying for and receive instant feedback. You will receive a score, which reflects the strength and relevancy of your cover letter for the role. This function provides feedback on your cover letter, showing you what is essential to include.
Graduate access
The CV Checker, is available to you even after you graduate. You can sign up with your personal email address and by entering an access code provided by the careers team. Email us for the code – careerscentre@leeds.ac.uk
