Lifelong Learning Centre x Careers Centre – How mature students can benefit from the Careers Service!

  1. Drop-ins with Peer Support Assistants (PSAs)
  • Monday to Friday, 10:00am – 16:00pm.
  • Student staff are trained to support fellow students with queries about CVs, Cover Letters, Interviews, Assessment Centres and anything else related to employment.
  • A diverse team, including mature and Post-Graduate student staff with experience in the world of work prior to studying.
  • Keep an eye out for themed drop-ins throughout semester two (some will be aimed specifically at mature students).
  1. MyCareer
  • Follow this link to check it out!
  • We use MyCareer to promote opportunities such as summer internships, placement years and graduate roles.
  • Some opportunities are only available to students at the University of Leeds (Exclusive to Leeds – summer internships, part-time term-time internships, placement years and graduate roles).
  1. Appointments with Careers Advisors
  • Full-time staff members with experience supporting all students across the university (including mature students).
  • They can run mock interviews, give guidance on how best to prepare for assessment centres and interviews, and advise you on how to draw your skills out of any previous experience and tailor them to individual applications and CVs.
  • Appointments can be online or in-person and are made via the MyCareer website.
  1. Interview rooms
  • All students can book a room to use in the Careers Centre if they have an online interview or assessment centre – this is also done through MyCareer.

Specifically for mature students:

  • We understand that some mature students come to University with professional experience, having already worked before studying. However, we also know that other mature students come to University without work experience, having spent time studying, caring for others, or travelling, just to name a few examples. Our advice and support for CVs, Cover Letters, Assessment Centres and Interviews are tailored to each student’s individual experiences (both educational and professional).
  • We understand that some mature students may feel like they cannot take part in a placement year or enrol on graduate programmes – this is not true. We encourage and support all students to gain such work experience to complement their degrees, to experience a new work environment on a temporary basis with a focus on learning and growing. Our resources provide information on what programmes are available, how to apply and expert advice to ensure that you have the best chance at success!
  • We understand that many mature students have other commitments besides university- so drop-ins are every weekday between 10:00am – 16:00pm, to cater for as many people as possible. If these times do not work for you, you can ask us any question via MyCareer or Instagram @leedsunicareers
  • We understand that many mature students will not be on campus as often – appointments with careers advisors can be booked online, anytime and take place via Teams during the week.
  • We understand that many mature students will have preconceptions which make them adverse to attending the Careers Centre. However, staff at the Careers Centre are in regular contact with the Lifelong Learning Centre to ensure we are continuously improving what’s on offer for mature students.

Commercial Awareness and COVID-19

Commercial Awareness and COVID-19

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the UK and global economy meaning major shifts across industry and the labour market. Jade Rogan, Careers Consultant at University of Leeds has some tips on how you can keep commercially aware to inform your career planning in these uncertain times.

There are a few different words I could use to describe the current situation COVID-19 has put us all in. Most of which I couldn’t write here. When we look at the reports of the economic impact of COVID-19 we see buzz words, ‘Economic crisis’, ‘economic fallout’, ‘recession’ bandied about by the media.

Some recent news headlines from the BBC include ‘Chancellor warns of ‘tough times’ for UK economy’, ‘South Asia faces worst economic growth in 40 years’, and, to add insult to injury, ‘’Up to 50m’ pints going to waste in empty pubs’. It’s intimidating and it’s uncertain.  No one knows for sure what will happen in the next week, three months or in twelve months time.

But the wheels keep turning for students and graduates still looking for work experience, graduate roles or to pursue further study. So amongst all of the uncertainty and the media’s worrying headlines, how can you keep up to date and stay commercially aware? Why is this more important than ever? And how can you use this to your advantage when making applications or thinking about your career plans?

We’ve got some ideas, take a look…

How to land a job after you graduate

How to land a job after you graduate

It‘s peak job-hunting time at the Careers Service – drop-in has been as busy as the doctor’s walk-in centre and everyone’s feeling the pressure. So what else can you do to land a job?

Don’t panic

It’s easy to feel like you’re the only person in the world who doesn’t know what they’re doing – spoiler alert, nobody does! There’s literally no rush to decide your forever career as you step out of uni, so don’t let all of the grad schemes and deadlines pressure you.

Even if you are interested in big grad schemes and miss out this year – most of these are open to graduates to apply to too, not just finalists. And nationally, only about 15% of graduates go into roles with the big corporate grad schemes – so your next step might well be something totally different.

Other jobs won’t have such an advance time scale – and are more likely to advertise as and when they need somebody new. So you can keep your eye out for jobs whenever you’re ready. Read more

Class of 2018: Question Your Future

Class of 2018: Question Your Future

classof2018questionyourfuture

This June is Class of 2018 Month, but what does that mean, exactly? Well, aside from a massive four-week programme of digital content designed to help you get to grips with your plans for the future, we’re encouraging all finalists to get in touch and question your future!

Each week we’ll be hosting a themed week of digital content, following the rough stages of finding, applying for, and landing an opportunity such as a job or research position. Your questions don’t have to be on the weekly topic, but we’d encourage it if possible! At the end of each week, we’ll answer all your questions in our Friday blog post, along with a summary of anything interesting that’s popped up during the week. We’re encouraging everyone to get involved if possible to make a great body of frequently-asked questions to help both current and future students.

As such, we’re offering some incentive for your time and effort – all students who ask a question will be automatically entered into our Class of 2018 raffle, where you could win a magnum of Moët & Chandon or a Hotel Chocolat selection. This raffle will be drawn at the end of Class of 2018 Month, and you must be able to come in to the Career Centre to collect your prize.*
